Over 200 jar graves unearthed in central province

The Vietnam Museum of History and the Museum of Revolutionary History Museum of Thua Thien-Hue province reported discovering over 200 jar graves belonging to the Sa Huynh civilisation at Con Rang relics in Huong Tra district, Thua Thien-Hue province.


 

During a recent excavation, archaeologists uncovered an additional 216 tombs in 2,300sq.m of the Con Rang relics, including over 200 jar tombs. This is the largest archaeological discovery of Sa Huynh jar tombs in Vietnam to date.

 

Van Dinh Thanh, Director of the Thua Thien-Hue Museum of Revolutionary History, said these tombs were grouped in units of 2-6 units and some comprised as many as 8. Jars were buried vertically, at different depths. Objects in jars and buried around jars are very diverse.

 

Jar tombs in Con Rang have four shapes: cylindrical, egg-shaped, cylindrical egg-shaped, and spherical.

 

In the previous two excavations, scientists found over 1,300 items made of iron, bronze, stone, glass and ceramic.
